From the President

Dear Members of Board 168

Another year is right around the corner. Hopefully everyone had an enjoyable summer and is now ready to begin officiating basketball games again. My term as President will end after the election at the Lenape Meeting. I would hope that everyone supports the new incoming President and E-Board. Our membership has grown to a point where we are now the second largest chapter in the state, with Board 33 being the largest. While this is good for us, it also presents a problem. We need new people to step up and help the board in all our ongoing projects. The same few members cannot keep doing all the work; we need the memberships’ help. The 2008 IAABO Fall Convention is being hosted by New Jersey, and each board has to contribute to this effort. This is the perfect time for our membership to come forward and show the state that we can be counted on when needed.

As I stated earlier, my term will end shortly. I just wanted to thank all the people who supported me through the past two years. At times it wasn’t easy, but I know that we are headed in the right direction. I would also like to thank each member of the E-Board for their tireless work and effort. It is greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Charley Zulauf

Dear Members of Board 168

The NJSIAA annual North-South All-Star Games this year were officiated by members of Board 168. Special thanks go out to the following officials who volunteered their time to work these games:

Jim Collins, Kevin Downes, and Ken Jenkins (Girl’s Game)

Jack Baum, Tracy Stamper, and Mike Whritenour (Boy’s Game)

They represented our board very well.

Thanks again.

Charley Zulauf

Secretary's Scoop

It's getting to the end of another season! They do go fast, sometimes too fast! It's hard to absorb the tips and help you get along the way. One official told me he/she worked 100 ball games! He/she must have picked up a lot of tips. I hope it shows and it helped him/her along the way by improving his/her skills. Now that the season is coming to its end, take a good look in the mirror and critique yourself. Did you improve on your visual signals? Was your positioning on the floor the best way to get the proper angle? Was your whistle blast sharp and clear? Did you administer the foul called properly, gave the scorer's table loud and clear the color first and then the fouler's number? Mechanics, oh well! Did you handle bench decorum correctly? No problems with the coaches! Because disqualification reports were the least received this year so far. Technical fouls properly called and administered? Block charge, was it sold because from observation it could have gone either way? Correctable errors, properly administered? Did you trail the play and keep the players in front of you at all times or did you plant yourself at the corner of the mid-court area? As the lead did you drift towards the end line where your feet were on the end line or did you drift directly underneath the basket? Did you go to the strong side to help out or did you stay in the corner of the end line as the lead? Did you call the travels? Or did you let it go because the players were traveling the whole game? It didn't matter, did it. When administering the foul try facing the table, did you signal the number of fouls assessed, then drop your arm and silently count the 10 seconds allowed? Did you chop in if missed? It looks like you might need more seasoning because when you do your self assessment you'll find that you might need some improving in your game. The signal for the full time is open palms, not closed fists. That's the signal for a double foul. Are you attentive to the refereeing details. Work on it and improve! There's more but that's enough for now.
